Verifactu postponed until 2027: everything SMEs and freelancers need to know

The Government of Spain has officially confirmed the postponement of Verifactu, the new verifiable electronic invoicing system, until 2027.
This decision offers much-needed relief to thousands of SMEs and self-employed professionals who have not yet been able to adapt their accounting systems to the new technical requirements.

At Bizital, we explain what this change means, why it has been made, and how companies can prepare in advance.

What is Verifactu?

Verifactu is the verifiable invoicing system developed by the Spanish Tax Agency (AEAT).
It is designed to ensure that all invoices issued by companies and professionals are digital, secure, and tamper-proof.

Once it comes into force, all companies will be required to use invoicing software compatible with Verifactu, capable of automatically generating immutable records for each invoice, including a QR code and a unique identifier, with the possibility of sending this information directly to the Tax Agency or storing it in a verifiable format.

The main goal of Verifactu is to increase fiscal transparency, reduce tax fraud, and promote the digitalization of business administrative processes.

Why Verifactu has been postponed until 2027

Verifactu was originally scheduled to take effect in 2026, but the Spanish Ministry of Finance has decided to delay its implementation by one year to allow businesses more time to adapt.

New official schedule:

  • Companies: January 1, 2027
  • Freelancers and SMEs: July 1, 2027

This postponement responds to the technical complexity of the new system and to the requests from business associations and self-employed organizations, which had called for a longer transition period.

With this extension, the government aims to ensure a smooth implementation and guarantee that both users and software developers have enough time to meet all the requirements.

What Verifactu means for businesses

Although the obligation has been delayed, Verifactu will become mandatory from 2027 for all professionals and companies that issue invoices in Spain.

The main changes introduced by the system are:

1. Mandatory use of certified software

Only software approved by the Spanish Tax Agency and compatible with Verifactu may be used.
These programs must ensure the integrity, conservation, and traceability of every invoice.

2. Automatic invoice recording

Each transaction will generate a secure digital record, with a unique identifier and QR code, ensuring that invoice data cannot be modified afterwards.

3. Greater control and transparency

The new system will allow the tax authorities to monitor economic activity more efficiently, reducing the risk of fraud or undeclared transactions.

4. Complete digitalization of the invoicing process

Verifactu marks a decisive step towards the full digitalization of invoicing, boosting administrative efficiency for both companies and freelancers.

How to prepare for Verifactu

Even though its entry into force has been postponed, now is the time to prepare.
At Bizital, we recommend that companies take the following steps:

  1. Review your current invoicing software.
Check whether it meets the technical requirements or if migration to a Verifactu-compatible solution is needed.
  2. Update administrative processes.
Digitize accounting management, invoicing systems, and approval workflows.
  3. Train your team.
Ensure that administrative and accounting staff understand how the new system works and its legal implications.
  4. Implement certified Verifactu software.
Anticipating the legal obligation will help avoid mistakes, fines, and last-minute costs.

Conclusion

The postponement of Verifactu until 2027 does not mean its cancellation.
Instead, it is an opportunity for businesses to prepare properly.
The future of invoicing in Spain is electronic, verifiable, and digital.
Adapting early will be key to ensuring compliance and improving business efficiency.
